Bodybuilding has been always attached to the use of anabolic steroids, which have many side effects proved by scientific research. Moreover, anabolic steroids have been illegal in the United States of America since 1991, and according to the Drug Enforcement Administration (2004), the possession or sale of anabolic steroids without a valid prescription can lead to the penalty of prison and a fine (Office of Diversion Control, 2004). However, making anabolic steroids illegal did not stop the usage of it and led to abuse of anabolic steroids. Nowadays, anabolic steroids are used by athletes, amateur, and even people who just want to have better physique in no time. Anabolic steroids can be dangerous if it was abused and it has many bad side effects, however there is also the issue of preventing and minimizing the negative side effects.
There are many negative side effects comes along the use of anabolic steroids, which have been proven by scientist. Studies show that anabolic steroids helps the human body to gain muscles and lose fat in a short time, however there are many negative side effects. According to the Mayo Clinic (2012), there are many risks that the user of anabolic steroids may develop and it is differ between men and women, but there are some risks that both genders may develop. Men risk developing prominent breasts, shrunken testicles, infertility, and impotence. On the other hand, women risk of having a deeper voice, an enlarged clitoris, increase in body hair, and infrequent or absent periods. However, both men and women may develop the risk of baldness, severe acne, liver abnormalities, hypertension, heart problems, increasing of LDL and decreasing of HDL (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2012). Although these are very serious risks the user of anabolic steroids may develop, it did not stop most of them of using it. However, most of the professional athletes are educated and aware of these risks, but they would still do whatever it takes to reach their dreams. These risks effect important body parts which can be dangerous in long term use.
Anabolic steroids are prescribed legally to cure certain diseases, but some athlete has been abusing it in order to enhance their performance and reach better physique. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (2012), “Doses taken by abusers may be 10 to 100 times higher than doses prescribed to treat medical conditions.” These numbers show how high the doses taken by abusers are. If any kind of drug has not been maintained by a medical supervision, it will not show the right results. Moreover, if anabolic steroids has been abused there is no doubt that the human body will have a negative reaction.
Professional athletes follow many techniques in order to minimize the side effects of anabolic steroids as much as it possible and cycles is one of their techniques. An article written by National Institute on Drug Abuse (2012) mentioned that cycling is a way of using anabolic steroids, which the user takes steroids for a period of time in weeks or months and then stopped for a break to give the hormonal system a chance to rest and then restart taking steroids again (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2012). This shows one technique that is used by users trying to avoid or minimize the bad side effect. Moreover, the continuous using of anabolic steroids can cause the body to stop producing its own testosterone which will cause many problems in the human body. There is a way for these professional athlete to avoid and minimize the side effect of anabolic steroids successfully, however there is also the long term side effects which has not been studied very well.
The effect of overdosing anabolic steroids has not been studied very well, because it would be unethical to study it risking people lives. As Mayo Clinic (2012) says, “It is impossible for researchers to design studies that would accurately test the effects of large doses of steroids on athletes, because giving participants such high doses would be unethical. This means that the effects of taking anabolic steroids at very high doses haven't been well studied.” If the studies was not accurate, it means the results are not too. These words bring us back to the starting point when we were questioning what the side effects are and if it can be minimized. There has not been an accurate study shows the negative side effects of abusing anabolic steroids, which mean that the results of the studies out there are not accurate too. However, anabolic steroids are not completely safe, and these studies did not determined the exact numbers, but it proved many negative side effects.
Taking anabolic steroids is an individual decision and the facts show that it is not completely safe. However, if there is not an accurate study in this subject, we do not want to confuse correlations with causation. There are many other aspects in life can cause these side effects. However, there is not a single study shows that anabolic steroids are completely safe, so this does not mean that it will not effect the human body negatively. Anabolic steroids user can face many bad side effects and minimizing or preventing these side effects has not been scientifically proven.
