Legalization of Steroid
Every athlete out there has a dream of being the best in his game. Therefore, it’s a daily hard work for these people, and a strict program to follow. It’s a lifestyle that they are living every day, monitoring their nutrition, exercises, and rest. All of this effort year round is to reach their maximum performance. However, after several years of training, they reach a level that their body can’t exceed. Using anabolic steroids gives them the ability to go beyond that limit and keep improving their performance toward their goal. On the other hand, there are some medical research shows that using anabolic steroids in the sport to enhance athletes performance can lead to several diseases and medical issues, such as infertility, heart problems, and liver damage. However, others say that these side effects depend on the medical history of the user, and the amount of dose they are taking.
There are many studies suggesting that anabolic steroids could lead to serious health issues. As NYU’s Langone Medical Center says, “The potentially dangerous side effects of anabolic steroid use are numerous. Men run the risk of testicular shrinkage, reduced sperm count, impotence, baldness, and enlarged prostate. Both sexes run the risk of serious medical problems, including high blood pressure and liver damage” (Alan, 2012). This clearly shows many serious health issues steroid users may face. In men, side effects are mainly affecting the reproductive system, blood pressure, and liver damage. These are very dangerous health issues and may even cause death. However, even though this is well known to most steroids users, many keep using anabolic steroids trying to improve their performance.
Once in a while, we hear stories about athletes getting into hospitals or emergency rooms, and we read many stories in different media about healthy athletes having serious health issues. However, some time media implies that this is due to using of anabolic steroid, and that would provoke the public and make them refuse the idea of steroids completely. On the other hand, we don’t know about the medical history of these athletes or the doses they have been taking or what kind of steroids was taken by them. According to National Institute on Drug Abuse, “Doses taken by abusers may be 10 to 100 times higher than doses prescribed to treat medical conditions” (July, 2012). This shows how high the doses abusers are taken, and this is for sure going to affect the human body. Just like any other medicine, if it was taken in overdoses, it would affect the body badly. Moreover, the rest of the dose that the body not using is going to affect organs and system very badly. It’s clear that these abusers have not been using steroids wisely, so they can’t be a measurement to how dangerous anabolic steroids are.
At the same time, there are many athletes who had been using anabolic steroids for many years, and they say that they have not seen any bad side effect from them. Here, we are talking about healthy athletes, who are careful and strict about their nutrition and doing their best to keep it safe and healthy. As the Hospital for Special Surgery says about using anabolic steroids in sport, “The degree to which they occur is usually dose-dependent: the higher the daily dose and the longer the period of time you take the drug, the greater your risk of side effects. If your dose is low, your risk of serious side effects is quite small, especially if you take the precautions below and any others your physician recommends” (Sep, 2002). Here we can see that higher the dose higher the bad side effect and that taking steroids for long periods will increase the risk. Overdoses play a role in showing the bad side of steroids, and that’s what behind most of these abusers stories. Moreover, taking it for long periods of time is risky, which means that the human body needs a break to grow and recover from these substances. Moreover, this is what most of the experienced body builders do; they take a cycle of steroid in 8 to 10 weeks, and then take a break from it for several weeks. It’s not only for their safety and health but it also more beneficial for their body to recover and grow. However, a lot of steroids users are taking it year round without a break. Moreover, this leads us to the last thing they mention about physicians recommendations, which it very important and useful for users results and safety: a doctor’s advice is very important to tell athletes who want to use steroids the appropriate doses for their bodies, and which kind of steroid they should take. All of this can be determined using blood tests, and hormone level tests.
Even though the danger of using anabolic steroids is out there, most athletes would do whatever it takes to reach their goals and dreams. Making anabolic steroids illegal has limited many gifted athletes who wanted to enhance their performance to the next level. Moreover, it made most of the users hide it from doctors, nutritionist, and public. In fact, hiding it is one of the causes to abusing steroids and overdoses; which we all want to prevent. Many abusers are taking pieces of advice on their doses, and usage of steroids from other users or dealers they are dealing with. However, abusers don’t know what kind of knowledge and experience these people have, but they would prefer taking their advice than doctors.
Moreover, if we are going to compare it with other things that are legal, we can find out that it’s not fair. For example, alcoholic drinks are legal here in the US, but it is also one of the causes of criminal activity, sexual harassment, and accidents. We can see how is it affecting consumers of alcohol, the community, and people lives. On the other hand, users of anabolic steroids are not dangerous to their community and not hurting anyone around, and they won’t hurt them self if they got help. However, alcoholic drinks are legal, while anabolic steroids are not.
Both sides have a good argument and reasons to hang on, and a good point of view. However, this argument can go on for years, and what we need is a solution to stop anabolic steroids abuse. Keeping steroids illegal is not the answer, steroids are existed around the world and will always be there. However, if we control and monitor the process of using it, this would satisfy both sides as I think. For example, athletes who had taken the decision of enhancing their performance using anabolic steroids will have to take several medical tests. After that, doctors would prescribe them the proper substances to use and doses. Moreover, a nutritionist would give them the proper diet to follow. I believe that this would be a good solution to apply.
Even though most of the steroids users knows how important doctor’s advice is, they don’t talk to doctors about it. The main reason is that anabolic steroids are illegal here in the USA, and they are afraid of getting in trouble. Therefore, most of the users are taking steroids at home, asking other users about what substances and doses they should take. In this research, I’m not saying that anabolic steroids are 100% safe, but negative side effects can be reduced, and major health issues can be prevented. At the end, I would support athletes taking anabolic steroids under the following circumstances: medical supervision, and nutrition, and the proper workout routine.
